Where in the World Will Kati Serve?

So...I know this post is a little delayed, BUT I really wanted a place where I could see that places where everyone guessed!  (It's a lot of places)

 I Bought

--A map of the United States

--A map of the World

--A 10 dollar Cold Stone Gift Card
--Orange Sticker Dots

And then I told everyone to guess 1 foreign place, and 1 stateside place!  The winner (whoever guessed correctly) or I (if no one guessed correctly) would win the gift card!  It was SO much fun to see where everyone thought I was going to go!

It was SO MUCH FUN to put everyone's guesses up!  I loved wondering about where I would go!  I would imagine what it would be like to serve in each place people said!

The world map with guesses on it!

Fun Facts About My Guesses
  • The most popular state was Florida, with 8 guesses (about 10% of the stateside guesses), followed closely by Washington (5), Maine (5) and Oregon (5).
  • About 80 percent of the United States were guessed at least once! States not guessed include Colorado, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming!
  • 96 people placed a guess of where I would go, and only 1 person won!
  • The most popular foreign guess was Brazil with 8 votes! Other popular foreign guesses included Argentina, Canada, Chile, England, and Spain.
  • I had guesses on 6 of the 7 continents (No one guessed Antarctica!)

M.A.S.H.
So...I have a slight confession to make.  I really didn't want to make a guess myself. I didn't want to think so much about it and then be disappointed when I didn't go to where I thought I would.  So here's what I did instead...
I printed out a list of EVERY MISSION and played a giant game of M.A.S.H.. You know, the game that you used to play when you were a teenage girl where you would write down boys, jobs, number of children, etc, and then pick a random number and go through, crossing out the results until their was only one left in each section.  And then that was your "future life".  I did that!
I only had two sections, FOREIGN MISSIONS, and STATESIDE MISSIONS.
It took FOREVER!! But it was so much fun!
MY RESULTS? Salt Lake City South and Nigeria!  Those would of never in a million years be my guesses for myself!

So once everyone had guessed, it was time to open the call!!

Tutorial- Fabric Covered Canvas Shoes

Let me start by saying...I have a pair of grey Toms and I love them!!  I wear them all the time (except right now because it is like a million degrees outside).
my toms :)
But then I saw these Toms on Pinterest.   They are SUPER cute and I fell in love.  (Etsy, fabric covered Toms- here) Unfortunately, I am a poor college student and my birthday is not until October.
Custom Fabric upholstered Toms

So I decided to try my hand at decorating my own shoes and I am SO happy with the result!  :)

Here is my advice on how to make your own fabric covered shoes!
As mentioned before, I am a poor college student so when I had a good coupon for Kohls, I went and picked up a grey pair of Bobs.  I paid less then 20 dollar, which was GREAT :) (Link here
Skechers BOBS Earth Day Flats

The first step is to pick out the fabric.  I bought 1/8 of a yard of 4 different fabrics which was plenty. I also bought fabric glue (I used Fabric-Tac, permanent).  It worked really well!  Additional Supplies- Scissors, X-Acto Knife, and Mod Podge.

The first step is to lay the fabric over the designed area. I started with the side of the shoe, then did the front sections, and finally the back.  Lay the fabric down and make sure it lays flat, especially around the curves of the shoes.  (PS- All the pictures I show are of the back of the shoe, hopefully it makes sense how to do it with the other parts...)
adding fabric to the back of the shoe.
Next glue down the fabric, in sections.  If you do it all at once you risk bunching the fabric.

Put LOTS of glue down (well...not a ton, but a good amount) then press the fabric down.  Check to make sure all the nooks and crannies have glue, otherwise the cutting part is very difficult.
adding glue, notice all the places I missed!  :)
Next, using scissors, cut of the excess fabric around the shoe.  DO NOT cut all the way to the shoe, leave a little bit of fabric left to cut exactly with the knife.

Using the X-Acto knife, cut the remaining fabric carefully!  In some places, I found that I could push a little bit of fabric into the seams, making the fabric look like part of the shoe.

That's basically how you cover the shoes.  One slightly difficult part is the back of the shoe, where the logo is. When you glue down the fabric, make sure to glue around the logo but not over the logo.
When the rest of the back is down, use the knife to locate the logo and cut a slit in the fabric, without cutting the logo.

Carefully, using scissors or the knife (I used both) , cut around the logo.

This is one of the spots that you can push the extra fabric (not very much, maybe 1/2 cm worth) underneath the label.

Still needed to finish the bottom of the shoe!
Finally, I used Mod-Podge to go around the edges of fabric in order to secure the fabric down.  I used my finger to blend in the Mod-Podge into the fabric a little more.
Do you like the pencil? I had no paintbrush :)
And TA-DA, here is the final result! :)

Awkward foot picture :)

So, what do you think? Would you decorate a pair of shoes?  I think I am ready to do another pair already!

Maybe like this--- What my shoes looked like after the first piece of fabric!  I really liked it like this but I wanted to use all my fabric too!

Tutorial- Hunger Games T-shirt

One of my favorite things to do is decorate t-shirts for various events.  I know you can order, buy, or use iron-ons to decorate t-shirts, but my favorite way is to use puffy paint!  I've decorated shirts for Disneyland, cross country, track, and just for fun!

Most recently, I made a Hunger Game t-shirt for when the movie came out!

I knew that I wanted to include the mockingjay pin on my shirt and so I found a picture of it off Google,

and then cut out all the black and put the shape back together.  This part was time consuming but as long as you take your time, and only cut out the black area, then you should be good! Also, keep track of what part goes where. (I printed out an extra picture so I could use it for reference)

Once everything is cut out, reassemble the picture on your shirt and tape all the pieces down.  Make sure the pieces will stay down and that they tape wont get in the way.  (Basically you just made a stencil).

Next, I used puffy paint (I used gold) to fill in all the area that should be black.  It doesn't really matter if this is perfect because you cover it in glitter later.
my shirt partway through stencil process
After you finish with the puffy paint, carefully, without smudging or bumping the wet paint, remove the paper from your shirt.  If there is any small mistakes, correct them now with the paint.

Then take some glitter (I used Tulip Fashion Glitter) and sprinkle all over your wet paint.  I bought an 18 gram container of glitter and sprinkled the whole thing over my design.  Wait a few minutes then dump the glitter off, preferably onto a piece of paper.  Then repeat that process again so the glitter is everywhere.  Transfer remaining glitter (I used less then 1/3 of my tube) back into the tube.
glitter!!
After I glitter-fied everything, I let the shirt dry.  Then I added, "Let the Hunger Games begin", and the date.

Finished t-shirt :)

Once that dried, I wrote "May the odds be ever in your favor" and "team Peeta".  (Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the back-my bad).

Fun partying! I loved the movie too! (although it wasn't as good as the book).
